We’re developing something new, but we’re starting small this year. Members’ Open Day is only for MSDA members, family, and guests. Dogs, too, of course!

Planning to attend? Please sign up below so we know how many to expect.

MSDA members, their family and guests may bring their dogs for an informal day at Rebel Ridge. Rebel Ridge Farms provides more than 250 acres of fields, ponds, and woods as well as a heated and air-conditioned clubhouse. Come out to practice your hunting, field obedience, and retrieving skills, see some experienced dogs in action, or just enjoy the day on this beautiful property. Everyone from those without any field experience to master hunters are very welcome.

The only price for attending is a generously-sized potluck lunch dish contribution and maybe some help setting up, serving, or cleaning up lunch in the clubhouse. Members who help with/during lunch will earn their volunteer credit for 2021. MSDA will provide water and a limited selection of other non-alcoholic drinks.

On the same day at Rebel Ridge, MSDA is holding a Spaniel Hunting Test. Members’ potluck dishes, supplemented with purchased items, also will provide the day’s lunch for the hunt testers. Members with flushing-eligible breeds are encouraged to sign up for the hunt test if you are ready, head over to that section of Rebel Ridge to watch some of the action, and/or volunteer to also help at the test for at least part of the day.

Members’ Open Day will be very informal:

  • Attendees may arrive as early as 8 am. To be sure the lunch buffet is ready by 11:15 or 11:30, please arrive no later than 11 am. Our use of the property ends at 4 pm.
  • There will be no structured activities and we are not claiming to be offering any formal training, though people can always work together, help each other, and offer advice. Experienced handlers and their dogs are encouraged to help others and provide demonstrations. Less experienced handlers are encouraged to ask lots of questions!

Sally Eck, who leads the Pointing Group at MSDA’s annual springtime Field Day, and Gary Seibel, who leads the Retrieving Group at Field Day, will be at Members’ Open Day. Although they will be enjoying the day out with their own dogs, they will be happy to provide demonstrations, encouragement and advice to others.

  • This event is not limited to field-trained dogs. All club members are welcome to join us for a day outside at this beautiful location.
  • We hope that everyone will have a great time, learn something, and make some new friends.

Experienced handlers optionally may order a limited number of chukars or ducks at $8 and $15 each, respectively. Pigeons and quail are not being offered. You may also BYOB (Birds). We’re using PayPal to accept the bird payments: you can use any major credit card and you don’t need a PayPal account. Bird orders will not be accepted and are not refundable after Tuesday, September 14th.

Starter pistols, and blanks or popper loads, all with appropriate safety restrictions, will be allowed. There could be a limited amount of live fire if some of MSDA’s experienced gunners choose to attend. Those intending to make loud noises also need to be considerate of others’ dogs that may not be acclimated to gunfire. Gary Seibel will be our “gun captain” for the day. If you have any questions about gunning, please contact Gary at FieldDayRetrievers@mdsportingdog.org .

The State of Maryland and MSDA require that all people in a field where there is live fire wear blaze/fluorescent orange clothing. A cap by itself is not sufficient to meet this requirement. You need a “vest or jacket containing back and front panels of at least 250 square inches of solid fluorescent orange color (worn as outer garment at all times) or an outer garment of camouflage fluorescent orange worn above the waist which contains at least 50% fluorescent orange color.” A very limited number of plain blaze orange t-shirts will be available for sale on site for $5.00 each (cash or check).

As of now, we are not aware of any Covid-related restrictions for the day. However, all attendees (members and guests, including kids — who need a parent/guardian signature) will be required to provide a signed MSDA liability release if they do not already have one on file. Most members already signed this with their membership application and many members and others signed them for previous events such as a Field Day or Field Training Basics.

Rebel Ridge is big, but it is not fenced, so please make sure you keep your dog on a leash or otherwise under your control at all times. And, of course, everyone is reminded that they ultimately are responsible for their own dog’s behavior.

Members’ Open Day will go on rain or shine, along with the spaniel hunting tests. However, the Members’ Day could be delayed to Sunday 9/19 or cancelled entirely in case of severe weather.

Planning to attend? Please sign up below so we know how many to expect. We’re asking you to contribute a generously-sized potluck dish. Please bring enough to serve your own group plus at least an extra 10-12 servings. If it can be safely stored and served the next day (Sunday), please consider using a disposable or recyclable container (and we’ll have a limited supply of extra containers); we’ll happily polish off the leftovers at Sunday’s Hunt Test. Rebel Ridge has limited refrigeration (about half of a not-too-big refrigerator is usually available to us) and we’ll also plug in a power strip with a few outlets.

If you change your mind about what you are bringing or need to cancel, please let us know. We’ll be shopping a day or two before the event to fill out the buffet and to make sure we have enough to serve everyone, including the hunt testers.
