MSDA Annual Summer Picnic & Pool Party

Saturday, July 21, 2018
9:30 am – 3:30 pm
8809 Slate Quarry Rd
Dickerson, MD 20842
Hosted by Alex and Steve Roth

This event is for MSDA members, their families, and their guests only. Dogs, too, of course!

MSDA will provide grilled hamburgers & hot dogs and cold non-alcoholic drinks. Attendees should bring a side dish or dessert to share.

All MSDA members and dogs are welcome. For field-trained dogs, or those who might be interested, there also will be opportunities for yard work and demonstrations.  Benjamin H. Schleider III and Anthony Z. Roettger co-authored the book “Urban Gun Dogs: Training Flushing Dogs for Home and Field”.  Their companion book is “Field Guide to Retriever Drills”.  We will use their second book to set up various drills.  The schedule for training is 9:30-11:30 and 1:30-3:30.  If you have any favorite drills from the book and are willing to demonstrate them please let us know by sending an e-mail to Steve Roth.

The pool will be open all day. Dogs are allowed in the pool, subject to some restrictions.  Since the pool has a vinyl liner we ask that handlers must accompany their dog to make sure that the dog does not attempt to climb out anyplace but the steps leading into the pool.  We also ask that handlers only have one dog with them in the pool at a time.

The property is fenced but handlers are asked to keep their dogs on lead during the training periods.  This is not only to prevent interference with the dogs doing the training but also as a safety measure to prevent accidents while people are arriving and leaving.

The bridge near the property on Thurston Road is closed for repairs.  The best route is to take exit 22 off of I270 onto Rt109 South toward Poolesville.  After about ¼ mile branch right onto Slate Quarry Road.  8809 is about 1 ½ mile down Slate Quarry on the left.  Be aware that Slate Quarry Road is paved but unmarked.  As a precaution stay to the right side of the road.

If you are planning to attend, please let us know by sending an e-mail to Steve Roth.
